On Friday, May 12th, Kinvolved and Practice Makes Perfect (PMP) co-hosted the 2017 Summer Summit at the social enterprises’ headquarters in downtown Manhattan.

The event offered professional development to school educators, administrators, district leaders, and community-based organization partners.

The event kicked off with breakfast and networking among the participants, followed by opening remarks from Miriam Altman, the Co-Founder and CEO of Kinvolved and Karim Abouelnaga, the Founder and CEO of Practice Makes Perfect. Attendees then broke up into break out sessions.

The first session, titled Attend to Achieve, focused on professional development and the importance of strong attendance and parental and family involvement for summer and school year success. The panelists discussed strategies they have used in their schools and summer school programs to set and achieve high attendance goals. Attendees exchanged ideas and took home proven strategies to ensure success. The panel featured:

  • Tarek Alamarie, Assistant Principal, John Adams High School
  • Tom Glass, Director of Technology, John Adams High School
  • Wenimo Okoya, Director, Healthy and Ready to Learn Initiative, Children’s Health Fund/PS 36 Margaret Douglas
  • Karina Rodriguez, Program Manager, Practice Makes Perfect

The second session, titled Follow the Leader, discussed the importance of near-peer mentorship and how to leverage this practice to rewrite stereotypes that are negatively impacting inner-city students. This panel featured:

  • Mauricière de Govia, Executive Director, Brooklyn Field Support Center
  • Alexandra Meis, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, Kinvolved
  • Michelle Moore, Head of Mentor Recruitment Department, Practice Makes Perfect
  • Shawn Rux, Director of School Renewal, District 27

This was the second summit on attendance and the first focused on summer school programs and the use of KiNVO to achieve high attendance. We aim to continue to offer additional summits and related events, in the effort to galvanize a movement of people who will elevate attendance by involving families in education. New York City is a special place to Kinvolved. It is our hometown, but we aim to bring this model to other urban centers across the country. We invite other communities to join our movement in their own local way.
